Locksmith Laws

There are 9 US States that currently have locksmith laws on the books. This page has been set up to allow easy access to these laws. Our goal is to also show local law enforcement officers how to enforce the law that is in their State.

California
Recently the State of California has raised it's fine from $1000 to $10,000 if you are practicing without a locksmith license. $5,000 of this fine stays with the arresting officers city and the other $5,000 goes to the State. This is a huge motivator for cities to start enforcing the law. The problem is that most police officers are not sure how to enforce the law.
Legal Locksmiths.com will be releasing a document very soon that will show local police officers just how to enforce the California law as well as other State laws. If you are a legal locksmith in a licensed State, we encourage you to print off the enforcement document after it has been released and take it to your local police department. Every State should mirror the California law and raise their fine to $10,000 and split the fees collected with the arresting city.
